Peaces of Advent Whispering in Worry

The original start of this post was a list of things that tend to worry people.

It was depressing. I don’t need to tell you what makes people uneasy. You already know. Because I’m thinking your concerns are just like mine. So, in the interest of space and overall mental health…

(Insert your own list of distresses here.)

Is it a short list? I wish mine was. When I think about all the things that trouble me it just makes me overwhelmed and a little anxious – and anxiety is a whole other can of worms. I let too much stuff harass me. Most of it I can’t control. Some of it I can, and I’m in the process of learning to tell the difference between the two. As I think about my list I realize that there’s something deeper going on…

I think sometimes I actually want to worry. It sounds crazy, but it seems easier to be annoyed than to trust. And isn’t that what’s really at the core of our irritations? They don’t allow for trust. And if they don’t allow for trust they definitely won’t allow for peace. They fill my thoughts and my heart. The “what ifs” and “how could this” and “what do I do ifs” crowd out any semblance of calm, trust and peace.

If you’re struggling with these problems today, please know that God is speaking peace right into your deepest worries and darkest fears. He is the only one who can break through and bring light to those dark places. Maybe he’s speaking to you through a friend. Maybe through His Word. Maybe through a song. Listen for him today. God is in control even when, especially when, it doesn’t feel like he is.

Here are a couple of ways God has spoken into my worries and fears. I pray they’re helpful for you, too.

"That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?
And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?
So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.
So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today." Matthew 6:25-34

"So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you." 1 Peter 5:6-7

"Sweet Peace of God" by Cheri Keaggy
(from her album "My Faith Will Stay", 1996)

Sweet peace of God
Come over me
Like a gift from heaven
Sweet peace of God
Take hold of me
Before I lose it forever
For I haven't been thinking
Much about You
And I know I live my life
In vain if I live without You
Sweet peace of God
Come over me

Sweet peace of God
Come over me
Like a give from heaven
Sweet peace of God
Take hold of me
Before I lose it forever
Jesus, You deserve more
Than I'm giving for you give Your life
So I could find the land of the living
Sweet peace of God
Come over me

'Cause I can't find peace
In the ways of the world
And I can't find the love
That I'm seeking
So I won't waste my time
I will leave them behind
And run to the One
Who's been there all the time
Holding onto my life

Sweet peace of God
Come over me
Like a gift from heaven
Sweet peace of God
Take hold of me
Before I lose it forever
Only You can be the refuge
That I need in the shelter
Of Your loving arms
Is where You will find me
Sweet peace of God
Come over me

'Cause I can't find peace
In the ways of the world
And I can't find the love
That I'm seeking
So I won't waste my time
I will leave them behind
And run to the One
Who's been there all the time (yeah)
Holding on

Sweet peace of God
Come over me
Like a gift from heaven
Sweet peace of God
Take hold of me
Before I lose it forever
(Repeat)

Sweet peace
Sweet, sweet peace
